Get ready for cold weather: fix those windows and doors now!

When a homesteader purchases that dream place, it often comes with an old house . On the surface, it might not even seem to be worth fixing up. However, you can do a lot with a little, if you're resourceful and patient. (Bev Sandlin in 79/4 should be an inspiration to us all.) Our old farmhouse was built around 1929 and although strongly built of native lumber, it lacked a lot. One of the things it lacked was windows that sealed the cold air out. Daylight was also visible under the front and rear doors. Sure kept me busy cutting wood the first winter. Since we're approaching cold weather again, this is a good time to pass on two of my "fixes" to our Countryside family. The first one is on sealing old wooden windows and number two is installing a new aluminum threshold and "KwickSet" type latch on an old door. The payback in better heating is well worth the effort. If you look at drawing (A) it shows a typical old style wooden window. Note that cold ai

machine shops - how to make the small shop profitable

Image
According to the US Census there are over 25,000 machine shops with less than 4 employees, not counting thousands of 1-man operations scattered across the country. Making a profit while owning a small machine shop can be tough in these economically depressed times. Here are some tips on making a profit. Hire family or close friends and classify them as officers not employees. This will help with insurance charges. Check with your insurance agent and state for particular requirements. Down size - removal Do you really need that 10,000 sf building? If possible run out of your shed, garage or barn. If not many self-storage facilities now offer storefronts. Upgrade to CNC Milling - If you have all manual machines consider upgrading to a CNC. Offer reduced rate services to local manufacturers. Locale manufacturers will have contracted large shops many miles away to machine their product. There are times when they need to rework, modify or make changes on the fly. They will turn to the

Your Guide to Buying a Mattress Online

Anyone who's visited a mattress s how room knows the dizzying variety of options available: plush or firm, memory foam or innerspring, platform bed or box spring. Each store often carries mattresses with different model numbers, so apple-to-apple comparisons can be all but impossible. It's more than enough to keep a budget-conscious consumer up at night.Several online startups and other retailers are working to change the way we shop for zzzz's.Casper.com, for instance, sells one type of mattress (starting at $500 for a twin) and offers free shipping to the U. it took the power of batman and playstation vr to turn a skeptic in an almost-believer

I'm Batman. I've waited years —since the release of 1989's "Batman"—to say those words and mean them. Considering that I've spent the bulk of my professional life writing rather than building a superhero's physique, it seemed unlikely, save for Halloween, that such a day would come. It has. Virtual reality, long the stuffof science-fiction filmsand, more recently, cute but largely forgettable cellphone accessories, has arrived. Earlier this year we saw the release of the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive, which makesit possible to put on a pair of goggles and disappear into a digital landscape—as long as you have a high-priced, top-of-the-line computer. Now with Sony's pearl PlayStation VR, an add-onto the PlayStation 4 so many of usalready have hooked up to our TVs,virtual reality is comingto the masses. And it's bringing Batman along with it. king size wood flooring platform bed and headboard with built-in lights and outlets and hidden drawers for $400!

Image
Wow, that's a really long title!A few years ago, I designed and built this headboard for my wife (fiance at the time) when we lived apart. It plugs into any 1 standard wall outlet, and includes 2 light switches for the overhead lights (3-way switches so either side would control them), and 4 regular outlets (2 on each side at the base) in order to accommodate anything we'd ever need to plug in on our side. I built it with the intent that no matter where we moved, no matter what room it went in, there would be outlets and lights for us - no more fighting over the 1 plug 10 feet away for our clocks and cell phone chargers! The original was made to fit a queen bed on one of those cheap metal glass frames with a box spring nestled in it. Fast forward - 2 big dogs, and 1 kid later (with another on the way), we've decided it's time to get a KING SIZE BED. I can't really reuse this headboard anymore, so I've decided to start from scratch and build another! This time a

The success story of self-taught businessman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong tells of pure entrepreneurial drive, professional management and an immense enjoyment of his work. THE Lunar Year of the Monkey is still far off – three months from now. Yet preparations to create new lively attractions in the i-City theme park have already begun with the arrival of a gigantic sculpture of a black gorilla. "Many more little monkeys (sculptures) will be added to join our King Kong in the theme park. I believe in laying the ground now to attract more tourists, especially during Chinese New Year," says Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong in Mandarin, as he gamely poses for a photograph with the sculpture. "This new feature, once fully lit at night with bright colours, will undoubtedly be a hot tourist spot during the holidays. "We have to work far ahead," says the energetic Lim, 64, as he drives 9v this writer around his massive property project i-City, whose gross development value (GDV) tot

Convenience Vs. Experience: Millennials Love Streaming But Aren't Ready To Dump Cinema Just Yet

Image
Millennials are cutting ties with cable in favor of streaming services. In fact, 67% of millennials pay for between one and three streaming services. This is in spite of the fact that they feel they are paying too much. Of course, streaming doesn't just impact how Millennials are viewing TV shows. Paid streaming channels also feature plenty of long form, cinematic content. Some of this is original programming. Some is feature film content released to streaming services by studios. The convenience and low cost of this is appealing to Millennials. Don't count cinema out though, not by a long shot. Movie theaters bring something that streaming cannot: an immersive experience. That's something that Millennials crave. According to National CineMedia , members of this generation are 50% more likely to claim movies as a passion. They are also most likely to buy tickets ahead of time, and nearly 90% aim to wire arrive at the theater early. So, why is cinema still a hit?
